Hänsel und Gretel by Humperdinck Engelbert at Aspen Music Festival, Summer 2024

Director: Joanna Gleason | Conductor: Patrick Summers | Costume Designer: Sharné van Ryneveld Nel | Lighting Designer: Josh Hemmo | Prop Master: Avi Miller | Scenic Assistant: Bridget Poulter

Cart/Wall

Since this production was at the Michael Klein Music Tent and had the orchestra on stage, the set needed to stay minimal. The director wanted a movable piece that could represent their space and hold other props. I found a painting cart on Facebook Marketplace, picked it up in the box truck, stained it, and added some distressed-looking wood before hanging the brooms and a straw angel.

Cage

We were able to reuse this cage prop and gingerbread men from CSU’s production of Hansel und Gretel. I repurposed them by separating the gingerbread men wall and attached them to 3 sides of the cage to conceal it. I also painted the backs to resemble the painting on the cage. The scenic assistant, Bridget, and I also created magnetic candies for Hansel and Gretel to grab and eat off the cage. I was a deck crew member and brought the cage on stage with the Witch inside. I spun it on its casters to reveal the true cage where Hansel got locked up.

Sprayable Flower

The Dew Fairy had a customized spray bottle to match her costume, with the flower spraying “dew” to match the story.

Oven Confetti

We put confetti poppers inside of the oven, which was also from CSU’s production, and the witch popped them when she got cooked.

Paint

I got to do multiple painting projects which included making a dog leash look like a peppermint for the witch, replicating the cage’s painting on the backs of the gingerbread men, painting some fig props to look like turnips, and creating some candy out of cardboard.
